Looking over some photos from a project that was very dear to me, DVA Theatre's River of Dreams. Developed in 2007 with DVA Theatre company and performed in 2007 and 2008, it was adapted for 3 different locations, two along rivers and parkland, the third in the busy Northcote High Vibes music festival.
It was a traveling outdoor musical theatre experience with each scene focused around a song, following the journey of the 'Rubbish Rangers' 4 superheroes out to save the rivers from choking with plastic bags. We developed the work by visiting local rivers and came up with the ideas over close to a year. Songs were written with Musical Director/musician Carolyn Conners and Visual artist Jessica Neath developed the sets and costumes with the group. Local Naturalist Tour Guide Steven Darroch came on several of our excursions while developing the piece and ended up being a key part of the performance, leading audiences from spot to spot, talking about the environment and pointing out plant species, both indigenous and invasive while following the Rubbish Rangers as they embark on their quest to save the Rivers from the evil Segon. Full of colour, action and song, the audience meet mermaids, strange birds, and attend a wedding while learning some local history. This project was awesome and I am so proud to have been a creator and director working with such a fantastic cast and team.
Created with the generous support from ANZ Trustees, Banyule city Council, City of Darebin and Nillumbik Shire Council
